The Importance of Proper Winter Drainage

It has been somewhat of a mild start to our winter season here in Fairfield County this December as we look towards 2016. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, it may take a turn for the worst sooner than later. The freezing temperatures are right around the corner, and now is the time to start thinking preparation. Before you know it, the flakes will start falling, accumulating and it may be too late to create the proper drainage to keep your property dry throughout the winter months.

There are several things to consider when preparing your property for the long Connecticut winter ahead. First, you’ll want to make sure your roof can properly drain water efficiently. As snow builds up and eventually melts, this can easily accumulate and clog up gutters causing ice dams. An ice dam is a term used when ice builds up on a roof and in the gutters. This will trap the water, causing it to find a different route to drain and may cause water damage to the building and its contents if the water leaks through the roof. This can be prevented by making sure your home heating system has proper ventilation and doesn’t trap the heat under your roof. Also, make sure your gutters are clear and free of leaf build up to allow a smooth flow for the water.

Secondly, you’ll want to make sure your home’s foundation can properly drain these large amounts of water to prevent flooding and leaks in the basement. A wet basement can not only be troublesome, but can be hazardous to your health. The melting snow and rain will eventually find its way to the ground due to a little thing we call gravity. Preparing your landscape to properly direct this flow in and around the ground surface can be one of the most essential components of keeping your home safe and dry this winter. There are many solutions to properly prevent your home from being vulnerable to water damage, and CT Landscape Design is here to help!

We all know you can’t control the rugged New England weather, but you can surely be ready for it. Preparing your landscape, roof, and gutters before the snow falls will save a lot of headaches this winter. Whether it is clearing ice dams, creating proper drainage for your property, or any other excavation needs to help you during this year’s “El Nino” winter, CT Landscape Design has a team of highly trained professionals to get the job done right!

Our highly skilled and equipped team has been fulfilling the visions of lots of Connecticut residents for many years and can guide you to make the right decisions. Choosing which tree to plant should be a well thought out process because of the significant investment of time and money it can call for. Selecting the proper tree to install can provide years of appreciation as well as increased property value, and create many environmental and economic benefits. Although, an unsuitable tree for your landscape may cause a recurring challenge to maintain, or even become a potential hazard. Be sure to consider the local regulations in your area to ensure you’re not breaking or violating and codes.

Trees can create several functional and environmental benefits and it is crucial finding out exactly what purpose you’d like the tree to serve. Will it be to increase the overall aesthetic look of your property? Or maybe you would like them to provide an obstruction of sights and sounds or even the sun? It is extremely important to choose the right species of tree that will fit your local climate. The last thing you want to do is transplant a large tree only to have it slowly dwindle due to temperature and/or weather conditions. Each type of tree is meant to be in a particular climate, though some may survive in many, it is important to research your area.

Does the tree of choice have ornamental value? The colors, texture, and/or flowers and fruits will play a large role in the decision process. Some species can provide lovely color displays for short periods in the spring or fall. Other species may have foliage that can add color year-round. Different foliage types and shapes can add visual appeal with a wide variety of textured leaves.

Trees that have fruits or nuts provide great sources of food for many species of wildlife, as well as humans. However, some people consider certain fruit and nut-bearing trees to be a problem around hard surfaces, such as sidewalks, patios and streets by creating a “dirty” look that requires more maintenance. These same trees can also create safety and health issues. Specific trees can attract insects and diseases, so it is imperative to find the right one.

Selecting the right tree species and locating where to put them on your property can be quite the process and CT Landscape Design is here to help. We have recently done several jobs in both F airfield County and New Haven County and have no problem traveling to ensure you have the highest quality work done! Why Tree Trimming and Pruning is Important

Tree pruning and trimming can be important for many reasons, whether it be for aesthetic purpose, the trees natural health, or for safety reasons. It may seem like an easy task that you can accomplish yourself, but it can actually be extremely dangerous and should be done by a licensed arborist. Tree trimming is known to cause more deaths and injuries than all other logging activities.

Why should you prune your tree? You will want to remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches to help prevent insect and decay organisms from entering the tree and growing larger. You may also find that your trees are growing a dense canopy and you may want to cut a few branches to increase the availability of air and sunlight to keep it healthier and prevent disease. Branches that cross over each other can cause pressure on other branches causing them to break and fall from the tree and should be taken down for safety and damage prevention. By using a licensed tree service professional, you will ensure a correct pruning job will be done. This will help to create and maintain a strong tree structure that will look amazing and prevent any safety hazards.

When are you supposed to prune a tree? Dead, damaged, and diseased branches should be removed as soon as possible. Otherwise, a general rule is spring through early summer is the best and gives the tree plenty of time to develop and gain health in those sparse areas. While pruning can be done at anytime, it is always good to avoid pruning during hot dry periods and extreme winter cold weather.

Here at CT Landscape Design our experienced arborists can help meet all of your tree trimming and pruning needs. We pride ourselves on being the best tree service in Fairfield County. If you have trees that need trimming or pruning, don’t hesitate to contact us today!
